iFi Zen Stream: Setup, Tips, Tricks...
May 27, 2024 at 12:21 PM Post #1,608 of 1,634
I use an iPhone and an iPad for streaming Tidal to my Zen Stream. The iPad works with the higher resolution files and the indicator light on the Zen changes colors accordingly. Most of the time, but not always, the resolution when using the iPhone is stuck on yellow for 44kHz 16 bit and my DAC indicates accordingly. Is there some setting on the iPhone that I need to change? When a friend visited recently, his iPhone streamed in the higher resolutions.
Thanks

The Android Tidal app has a default setting of "High" for Wi-Fi streaming (yellow light only). Setting this to "Max" allows for higher resolution streams (yellow, green, and blue lights).

Settings > Audio & Playback > Quality: Wi-Fi Streaming > Max

Would assume that iPhone has a similar setting

Shame the Zen stream doesn't have plans to support Plex, I just got into PlexAmp as a Roon alternative and it would've been great to use the ZS

This got me on a tangent and ended up trying out DLNA for the firs time off my Plex Server and....I noticed a lot of audible noise when tracks are loading into that. Like the first couple seconds of buffering, but also when hitting pause momentarily, making me think the noise is just constant? No bueno (and I'm not talking measurable noisefloor stuff, but actual static)

Yes, I have the phone set to Max. Still doesn't result in the higher resolution streams.
That is odd, I have an iPhone and have used it many times to the Zen and have gotten accurate stream indication. (Obviously MQA era. is different colors)

Make sure all are updated to the latest firmware versions, phone, and Tidal.

We will soon have Tidal Max implemented on the ZS, it was just released for the NEO Stream, maybe then everything will be correct for you.

Cheers!!

I know this isn't supported (but would fall under "Setup Tricks" ), but since Zen OS is (a fork of?) Volumio, would it be possible to install Headless Plexamp on the Zen?

https://www.reddit.com/r/plexamp/comments/1be4tbr/installing_plexamp_headless_inside_volumio/
In all honesty, I do not know, many folks here are way above my pay grade in that area.

However it is important to keep in mind that the Zen Stream software (To My Knowledge) is only based on Volumio, I have never once been told it is full-blown volumio and such can handle the same modifications of that you are speaking of here.

But, I am also one to say that I think anything "may" be possible if the right folks can figure it out.

Cheers!!

I just figured my problem. I had Bluetooth on from a previous streaming session in my shop. Once I turned it off I started getting full resolution in Tidal.
Ah! That's good that you have figured it out, I probably wouldn't have thought of that myself!

Cheers!!

As mentioned above, version 2.32.9 had dropped from the server, when it was reuploaded it had caused issues.

This version has been out since last year so I am not sure why you would not have already had this version of firmware, however after the issue, it was decided (with the newer version being in beta) that since this newer version will address current issues and contain all of the previous fixes not to reupload it as everyone should already be on this anyway.

The new version should be out shortly, and most should have long been on 2.32.9 anyway, so the only thing (technically) that is missing from 2.31.7 is Airplay 2.

What version are you on right now, and is there some reason you are not on 2.32.9 before this issue? Of Course apologies for any inconvenience.

Cheers!!

I'm still on 317 because I had to roll back to it a while back, 329 caused me issues
